Part 4 - Wheels and Tyres

Your alloy wheels have a lot to contend with and probably suffer more attacks from brake dust, dirt, grime and road salt than any other part of your car so it’s essential to give them a thorough clean so they look their best over the summer months.

Method:

Clean one wheel at a time and start by giving it a good rinse to remove superficial dirt, then apply a good quality non-acidic Wheel Cleaner. The non-acidic formula will remove stubborn marks left by brake dust and road grime without damaging coatings, lacquers or tyres. Spray evenly over the alloy wheel and leave for 3 minutes to allow the formula to penetrate the dirt (be careful to avoid over spraying and make sure that the formula doesn't dry out before rinsing off, particularly in warmer weather).

As the wheel cleaner does it’s work, use a soft bristle Alloy Wheel Brush to agitate the wheel surface and remove grime and brake dust without scratching the finish, then rinse the wheel thoroughly and dry it off with a Microfibre Cloth. Repeat this as necessary until the wheels are completely clean.

Finish the look by giving your tyres a spray over with a good quality Tyre Dressing - preferably one which doesn’t contain silicone as this can age the rubber prematurely. This will help keep them clean and also make future cleaning easier. Newer formulas are water based, won’t damage the tyre and can be layered to give whatever level of sheen you desire, but be careful to avoid spraying the wheels, tyre treads and any brake apparatus.

Top Tip:

Tyre dressing can also be sprayed sparingly onto black plastic trim and then buffed, or sprayed onto a cloth and wiped over the trim to give a beautiful silk finish.
