Silverstone Classic 2018

Silverstone Classic 2018

25th Jul 2018

We were absolutely thrilled to be travelling down south to the Silverstone circuit to attend the Silverstone Classic festival last weekend! As proud sponsors of both the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association (HGPCA) and Motor Racing Legends (MRL), we were able to support all of their racing drivers by cheering them on from the sidelines…and providing them with a fantastic showroom finish for their classic cars!

Throughout the weekend both associations were involved in a variety of races. Below is a summary of the top 3 winners from each race:

RACING

On Saturday morning at the national paddock we saw the Stirling Moss Trophy for Pre ’61 Sports Cars and celebrated Chris Ward coming in first place, Tony Wood and Will Nuthall coming in second, and Roger Wills coming in third with MRL.

Later in the afternoon we headed over to the international paddock and saw Will Nuthall coming in first place, Peter Horsman coming in second, and Timothy de Silva coming in third in Race 7: Adrian Flux Trophy for Pre ’66 Grand Prix Cars with the HGPCA. They showed great skill and determination in each race and we were very proud to be presenting their prizes at the podium!

On Sunday morning, MRL were competing for the Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy for Pre ’56 Sports Cars. Gary Pearson took the first place prize, followed by Frederic Wakeman and Patrick Blakeney-Edwards in second place and Martin Stretton and Richard Wilson in third place.

In the afternoon, MRL were racing again for the Historic Touring Challenge where Nick Whale and Harry Whale came first, Mark Smith and Arran Moulton-Smith came second, and Ric Wood came third.

HGPCA were also racing in the afternoon at Race 20: Adrian Flux Trophy for Pre ’66 Grand Prix Cars. Peter Horsman took first place, Mark Daniell came in second, and Tony Wood came in third. It’s safe to say that everyone completed another day of excellent racing and was well deserving of a night of celebrations!

The drivers performed absolutely incredibly throughout their various races, however the Supagard team struggled trying to attach our branded logo stickers to the sides of the cars after having treated them all with our paint protection and aftercare products! The Aqua Free used on the cars made it particularly difficult...

DETAILING

In amongst all of the racing, we were also able to detail some classic cars over the weekend. On Friday, we had the pleasure of detailing a 1934 Lancia Astura. This classic car has taken many different forms since the 30s. It began its life as a 7 seater limousine and was originally bought for £75! Following this, renovations commenced and soon the Astura was converted into a racecar where it was used to set the record for the fastest lap time at Silverstone during a Vintage Sports Car Club race in the early 50's. Today, the car takes the form of a 2 seater coupe and retains many of its original features. It was temporarily owned by Eric Clapton, however is now in possession of one of its original owners, Michael Scott. The 84 years of history behind this car is incredible and we were extremely lucky to be able to admire it up close and treat the paintwork!

On Sunday the Supagard team managed to detail two cars. Firstly, a classic 1937 Talbot Lago T26 SS. This was one of four of this particular brand of car which was entered into the very first Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1948. The ridges on the body of the car were cleaned using a Tar Remover product available on the Supagard aftercare shop, before further detailing and polishing took place to give the car a brilliant showroom finish.

Secondly, we detailed a 1973 Lancia Stratos Number 3 Prototype. This car was purchased 20 years ago by its current owner and has been all over the world, completing over 80,000 km! Each intricate detail and panel of the car including each section of the grill on the front of the car was detailed with careful precision before polishing. The results were fantastic and the owner was delighted with the finish!

In addition to photographing and detailing many classic cars competing over the weekend, we had an extremely busy and eventful few days! On Friday night the heavens opened with a very heavy rain shower, leading us to a very bumpy ride home in a golf Buggy - the same one used for Donald Trump’s recent visit to Scotland!! We managed to take advantage of the huge amount of car manufacturers and enthusiast stands advertising in the village area of the festival and enjoyed a few test drives across the weekend. Additionally, the music venue gave us some great evening entertainment - we enjoyed watching Soul II Soul, UB40 and many other great acts. The funfair also kept us occupied in some rare free moments during the day!

We would strongly recommend this event to anyone, whether they consider themselves a car enthusiast or not. The Classic festival is organised to cater for all visitors and it offers many activities for the whole family as well as an incredibly impressive range of motor racing vehicle displays and competitions. We had a busy, exciting and enjoyable experience at the festival and cannot wait to go back next year to enjoy the weekend all over again!
